A Basic Guide To The Search Console In Google Analytics

There are many tools that webmasters have at their disposal to help them achieve the goals they want.  One of these tools is the Google Search Console which many webmasters include into their Google Analytics.  If you own and run a website, you need to know about the search console and how you can use it.

What Is Google Search Console?

The Google Search Console is the new name for what was the Google Webmaster Tools.  This is a free service which has been provided by Google to allow website owners to see information about how their websites are doing in the Google search results.  There is also information about the indexing that Google does on your website as well.

The search console uses a Search Analytics report to show you which Google queries return pages of your website.  You will also be able to see how many times these results were seen and how many times your website was clicked on.  The rank that your webpage has for the search term is also available along with the country of this ranking the best SEO company in Houston-Prime Houston SEO

Setting Up Search Console

If you want to get access to the search console reports, you need to verify your ownership of the website or property with Google.  Google views a property as a domain, a subdomain or a single path of a website.  You will be able to get different levels of access to the data of the site depending on the URL you are verifying.

If you verify the URL with HTTP and www you will be verifying the HTTP version of the entire website.  If you support both www and non-www versions of your website, which you should not be doing, you need to add both to the search console.  Once you have done this, you will need to set a preferred domain for the website.

Using Google Analytics

It is likely that you already have Google Analytics set up for your website if you are looking at the search console.  If you do, you will be able to verify your site ownership by using your Google Analytics account.  To do this you will first have to edit the permissions on your analytics account.  You will then have to use the Google Analytics snippet in the <head> tag.

Google Analytics will need to be installed directly with search console and not via the tag manager.  If you are going to use the tag manager to verify your ownership, you will need to use the container tag and not Google Analytics.

The Google Search Console is a vital tool that all website owners need to know about and use.  The search console provides valuable information about how your website is doing on Google, the search terms you are showing for, the number of impressions and the number of times someone has clicked through to the website.  There are a number of ways that you can verify your website with the tool and you should use one that you are comfortable with.
